Listening to All My Life by Lil Durk and J. Cole with my six-year-old son recently sparked a moment I’ll never forget. What started as a simple question about a lyric opened up a bigger conversation about where I come from, what I carry, and what I hope to pass on. This is about music, memory, and the legacy we’re building; one song, one story, one life at a time.
All My Life: A Song, A Story, A Legacy
A few weeks ago, something small but deeply significant happened.
I was riding around with my son, six years old, all heart and curiosity. When the song All My Life by Lil Durk featuring J. Cole came on.
I love that song.
Not just because it sounds good, but because it feels good because it feels true.
Because in a lot of ways, it tells my story.
And then, from the backseat, my son asked me:
“Pop, what does it mean when they say, 'they been trying to keep me down'? Who's 'they'?"
I froze for a second.
How do you explain the weight of the world to a six-year-old who’s still light as a feather? How do you honor both the world you come from and the childhood you're trying to protect?
